A note about Obtaining the Benefits of Ginger - Methods of Use

Herbs are God and nature's gifts to us. While the use of herbs and herb remedies has brought excellent results for many people, do note that their health benefits may be limited when they are used in isolation. However, when combined with some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition, the impact on one's health will be greatly magnified.

In natural health and healing, we believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases. We also believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man’s understanding. It is thus a good idea to apply these fundamental health steps no matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem.

In general, for maximum potency in terms of obtaining the many health benefits of ginger, it is best to use fresh ginger in the preparation of any herbal remedies.

Ginger for Cooking and Foods with Ginger

The many health benefits of ginger can be reaped in everyday foods. Besides its medicinal properties, ginger spice also adds a strong flavor when used to cook.

In addition, ginger is an active ingredient in a whole lot of products like ginger bread, ginger ale, ginger pickles, ginger snaps, ginger paste, and ginger candies.

Ginger Tea / Ginger Root Tea

Ginger root tea is an excellent way of getting some health benefits of ginger, and it is very famous across the world for its innate ability to soothe sore throats and provide relief from the common cold.

A simple ginger tea recipe is to boil several pieces of ginger in water, with the amount used depending on the strength required. First timers tend to use too much, so one may want to go slow first.

A specific recipe for preparing ginger tea is given as follows:

Ginger Tea Recipe

Ingredients

  • 4 cups of water
  • 2-3 inch fresh ginger root pieces
  • Honey and lemon juice, if required only

    Process

  • First and foremost, skin the ginger root and chop it into fine pieces, or mince it.
  • Boil water in a dish and add the minced or finely chopped ginger pieces to the boiling water.
  • Simmer on a low flame for about 20 minutes.
  • Strain the mixture and serve hot.
  • You can add a spoonful of honey and half spoonful of freshly squeezed lemon juice for added fragrance and flavor.

This works well for sore throats and common colds and adding sugar is NOT advisable.

Ginger peppermint tea can also be prepared by adding some peppermint to the ginger root tea.

Ginger Juice and Ginger Herbal Syrup

Further, ginger is used in the form of honey-based herbal syrup, or even as raw ginger juice. The latter is another good method of getting some health benefits of ginger, and it can be prepared simply by putting pieces of raw ginger through your juicer. It is a good idea to mix ginger juice with other types of juice. Carrot juice and some ginger juice mixed, for example, give a delicious sweet and refreshing flavor.

Exercise caution on the amount of ginger used to make ginger juice. The first time I did it, I used a large piece of ginger. After I drank my juice, for a few minutes, I felt like my digestive tract was on fire!

Ginger Extracts, Ginger Pills and other Ginger Supplements

Ginger extract is often used in the formulation of ginger supplements, either alone or together with other herbs in herbal formulas. These can take the form of capsules, tablets, liquid extracts or tinctures.

Finally, essential oils are also extracted from ginger plants and used.

External Ginger Uses and Health Benefits of Ginger

Some health benefits of ginger can also be harnessed externally.

    Ginger compress

Mix about 4 spoonfuls of ginger juice in about 4 liters of warm water. Soak a towel in this water, compress it and apply to areas affected by lumps or cysts for gradual relief.

    Fungal Infections

Ginger is well-known for its antifungal properties and is often used to treat conditions such as athlete's foot.

Add ginger to some lukewarm water, allow the mixture to cool, and then immerse your feet in it for about 5 to 10 minutes. Ginger will help bring relief from the itching and burning symptoms of infections.

    Muscle Strains

To provide relief from muscle stains, ginger paste can be mixed with turmeric and then applied gently in very small doses, twice a day, to the affected areas.

    Natural Breath Freshener

To help relief bad breath as well as reduce excessive sweating, one can simple chew on tiny pieces of ginger.
