Traditional Chinese Medicine and Infertility Causes There are many causes that are considered to be reasons that may cause infertility and TCM therapy takes them all into consideration before arriving at an accurate diagnosis. Imbalances in Chi or Qi energy, imbalances in the body meridians, imbalances in the fundamental substances, and disorders in the Zang Fu are considered as contributors to infertility. Blood stasis and phlegm stasis, which can disrupt reproductive capabilities, are also viewed as common causes for infertility. These disharmonies usually result from stress, deficient diet, sexual intemperance, emotional conflicts and disharmonies, and other constitutional factors. The broad categories in which these causes are segmented are as follows: Infertility TCM Treatment Infertility TCM treatment emphasizes herb and acupuncture formulas to rectify this imbalance. TCM may be used alone or in combination with western conventional medicine. Unless the cause is a congenital or structural problem, TCM may provide a remedy via herbal medicine and acupuncture. Qigong (or Chi Gong) is seldom used to cure infertility per se, though qigong exercises may be used to address stress, anxiety and other symptoms associated with infertility.
