About Ionic Detox Foot Bath

An ionic detox foot bath sometimes also goes by the names foot detox or foot spa. These are terms that originate from Japanese culture and mythology.


History and Origins

Legend has it that well over 1600 years ago, a group of monks and unwell people undertook a long pilgrimage, a journey that took them across perilous snow-clad mountains in winter. To provide themselves some relief on a particularly chilly winter evening, they warmed their feet in a nearby hot spring streaming out of a nearby rock.

The next morning, on waking, not only were the ones who were unwell fully cured, but the healthy ones and everyone else in the group also felt full of vitality and high energy. This led to many more people undertaking the very same pilgrimage. At the same time, the healing powers of the hot spring and foot detox also gained popularity and belief.

Today, a foot spa is resorted to both for relaxation as well as healing. Foot spas or foot baths include the use of technology such as ionic detox foot baths, and also ancient herbal foot spas, to which healing herbs are added to the foot bath.

The temperature of the water for foot detox is maintained at approximately 42 degrees centigrade for a timeframe of approximately 25 minutes per sitting. The benefits that are attributed to foot detox range from relief from fatigue and stress, to the cure of neuralgia, rheumatism, haemorrhoids, frostbite, allergies, headaches and insomnia.

While it is scientifically proven that foot detox with electrodes (ionic detox foot bath), with minerals and / or herbs will help to relieve stress and fatigue as well as energize the body, it is still not clear if the other claims are true. It does lead to rejuvenation and improved overall feeling of well being, and thus should be experienced for the same.


Ionic Detox Foot Bath

The mechanism that is in operation for a foot detox bath is a process called electrolysis. This process is created by introducing the stipulated amount of DC current to the foot bath water, which causes the molecules of H2O (water) to separate, thereby producing negatively and positively charged particles. These are ions. The negative ions circulating in the water are absorbed by the skin, into the body, via a process called osmosis.

Osmosis is the process where a charged particle can pass through a membranous layer from an area of high concentration to one of low concentration. Hence, during a footbath, the negative and positive ions in the body are most likely getting equalized, providing the benefits of relaxation and other associated benefits of better health and well being.

This state of being is what is termed as the state of Chi, or state of inner balance and harmony, by the Chinese. It is in this state that the body can heal itself. Through detoxification, an ionic foot bath can bring you to a state of balance and harmony, and healing is self driven from this point onwards.

After a session of detox with the foot detox spa, the water changes color. This, according to manufacturers and proponents, supposedly represents the removal of toxins from one's body and internal organs and tissues.


Does It Work?

Does a detox foot soak or foot spa detox actually work? The jury is still very much out for this one.

On the one hand, there have been remarkable stories of recovery from diseases and health conditions after supposed detoxification using the ionic detox foot bath. On the other hand, there are those who believe that these contraptions may actually introduce harmful metal compounds (from the electrodes) into the human body. It is thus doubtful how useful this protocol can be for serious diseases.

Either way, most agree that a session using an ionic foot detox machine brings about a feeling of relaxation and rejuvenation. That, perhaps, is enough for most of us.
