When you choose to go on a juice fast, you will only consume the juice of raw fruits and veggies, as well as water. Depending on the juice fast you are choosing to use, the juice may or may not be diluted with water. During a juice fast, no solid foods are consumed, so it’s considered to be a pretty extreme form of dieting.

Usually, you will only go on a juice fast for about two or three days, because any longer than that and you may experience some uncomfortable reactions. Having said that, there are some people who actually juice fast for weeks or even months. It’s also recommended that people only try a juice fast during the warmer months of the year.

Before you embark on the fast itself to harness the juice fasting weight loss benefits, you will first go on what is referred to as a preparation diet. During this time, it is recommended that you do not drink any alcohol, smoke, or consume anything with sugar, wheat or animal fats. While on this diet, you should primarily be eating organic fruits and vegetables.

Once you start the fast, most diets recommend that you consume anywhere from 32 to 64 ounces of freshly squeezed, organic juice daily; this should enable you to obtain juice fasting weight loss effects. You can certainly drink more.

The juice is supposed to be sipped slowly throughout the day. Fruits and veggies that are usually used during this fast include kale, cabbage, celery, pineapple, apples, cranberries, carrots, beetroot, spinach and other greens.

Usually, it is recommended that you also drink about six glasses of room temperature or warm water throughout the day. This will help to keep you hydrated while you are fasting.

What Are the Risks of a Juice Fast?

It may seem like there are no side effects to a juice fast, but complications can occur and sometimes do. For instance, About.com mentions that some of the temporary side effects of a juice fast include headache, acne, constipation and hypoglycemia. It goes on to talk about other longer term side effects, including diarrhea, fainting, low blood pressure, dizziness, heart arrhythmias and kidney problems.

However, for most healthy people, a juice fast can be helpful in cleaning out the digestive system (as well as other organ systems) and giving the body a break from all the toxins it normally has to digest. That’s why it’s recommended that you use only organic produce on this diet. And, not to mention the possible juice fasting weight loss benefits you could obtain.

Can You Really Lose Weight with A Juice Fast?

So, are there really juice fasting weight loss effects?

You absolutely can lose weight with a juice fast, but don’t go overboard. If you are looking to incorporate this method into your weight loss routine, consider starting out doing two days once every two weeks. For the rest of the time, eat healthy, light meals and exercise well.

As your weight decreases and it gets more difficult to get to your target weight, consider fasting for three days once weekly until you meet your desired weight.
