Maple Syrup Cleanse - Detox with Maple Syrup, Lemon Juice and Cayenne Pepper

The Maple Syrup Cleanse (known also as the Maple Syrup Diet, the Lemonade Diet, the Lemon Cleanse, or the Lemon Detox Diet) has been in circulation since the 1950s, when Stanley Burroughs introduced his concoction to the public under the name of the Master Cleanse.

All but out of popular circulation, it has since made a comeback due to the interest of several celebrities in its quick weight loss abilities.

Burroughs' lemonade was made with maple syrup and was formulated to cleanse the body of dangerous toxins. He made his claim using the benefits of both lemons and maple syrup. For those who can handle it, another valuable ingredient, cayenne pepper, can be used as well. All these go into 8 ounces of water, and the formula has been reinvented several times and used by many marketers on the internet to promote their own line of supplements and / or cleansing kits.

As you embark on the maple syrup cleanse, take three days to prepare your stomach and mind for less food. Remove all dairy, meats and processed foods on the first day, leaving you with fresh fruits and vegetables. (Day 1)

On the second day, you can consume all the fruits and vegetables that you like, but you need to juice them. (Day 2) On day three, juice 10 to 15 oranges to make two liters of juice (add purified water as needed), and mix it with two tablespoons of maple syrup. (Day 3)

On the fourth day of your maple syrup cleanse procedure, prepare the master mix, following it approximately 10 days, being sure to use a water-salt-lemon juice flush to produce the bowel movements needed to gently cleanse your gastrointestinal (GI) tract. (Prepare this flush mixture by using 2 teaspoons of sea salt, the juice of 1 lemon, and a quart of warm water. Mix well, and then drink the whole thing.)

Each morning during the maple syrup cleanse protocol, prepare what you will need for the day by mixing 14 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice, 14 tablespoons of real maple syrup, 1/2 teaspoon (at least) of cayenne pepper, together with 2 liters of distilled water (this is the master mix). This is to be taken with you and consumed throughout the day, along with extra water and the flush mixture (which is to be consumed once in the morning and once in the afternoon). This will aid in not only controlling, but also in reducing any hunger pangs.

(Master Mix and Flush Mixture to be consumed from Day 4 to Day 13.)

(Note: Epsom salt can also be used in place of sea salt.)

When you have completed the intended amount of days on the lemon-cayenne-maple syrup mixture, enjoy a day of fresh squeezed orange juice mixed with 2 tablespoons of maple syrup, as you did on the day preceding the use of the master mix. (Day 14)

The next day, you can again have as much fresh fruit juice and fresh vegetable juice as you desire. (Day 15)

Then, on the following day, you may eat all of the vegetables and fruits that you want (Day 16), followed by a regular diet on the day after that (Day 17). It will be important to make good food choices from this point on. Avoid, at all costs, emotional eating and processed foods.

Health Benefits

So what are some potential health benefits of this lemon and maple syrup cleanse?

When introduced, Burroughs claimed his program to be a detox plan that would not only help remove harmful toxins from the body and cure ulcers, but would aid in weight reduction as well. Possibly one of its best claims was its ability to help with cravings resulting from over eating, tobacco, and various hot drinks such as coffee.

This lemon and maple syrup cleanse is promoted as being positive for ridding the body of pesticides, chemical fertilizers, hormones, heavy metals and prescription drugs. Not only that, it can help with such things as congestion as well.

The body has been designed to keep itself free of toxins that can find their way through the lungs, liver, kidneys and other organs that perform the task of elimination. Periodic detoxification protocols, such as the lemon and maple syrup cleanse program, can help.

Negative Aspects

While this type of cleanse has remained popular, many people find it difficult to adhere to - in particular, the same taste for such a long period of time. Also true is the lack of vitamin, mineral, and other nutrient intake for two weeks.

Some have experienced a need to "splurge" (i.e. consume large quantities of unhealthy foods) when they come off the maple syrup cleanse program as well. For this and other health reasons, many nutritional experts advise individuals to consult their health care practitioners before beginning this cleansing program.
