Possible Spirulina Side Effects or ReactionsAre there any spirulina side effects or adverse reactions? Spirulina is a naturally occurring food source that has many health benefits. As with almost everything, however, there are people who may experience some unwanted reactions when they take spirulina. Spirulina is on sale at many health and nutrition stores as a food supplement and most people have no adverse reaction to it whatsoever. Generally speaking, this blue-green algae has many health benefits and does not bring about any significant side effects of note. However, although there are no documented reports of serious spirulina side effects, it is still possible that some people may experience some of the following reactions after taking this food - this is something you would probably like to take note of before or during consumption. Spirulina is seventy percent protein that promotes the body's natural metabolism. In some cases, this can produce a slight fever in people. Spirulina helps burn off excessive fats in the body, which can cause feverishness and sleeplessness. When you start using spirulina as part of your diet, you may find that the color of the material you excrete is a strange green color. If you do experience change in the color of your faeces, this spirulina side effect is nothing to worry about; this is usually caused by the fact that this plant is a blue-green color and thus may affect waste matter. One of the problems that we all have, is a tendency to blame new medicines or new foods for any changes in our body, when the change may be something completely natural or caused by something other than what we think. If you experience chest pain, it is very likely that this has nothing to do with spirulina and is probably just an excess of gas in your system. If your pain increases, it is still more likely to be caused by something other than spirulina. Feeling overly tired after you have taken spirulina, is again more likely to be caused by something else and not a reaction to the algae. If you are worried that your problems might be spirulina side effects or adverse reactions, then you should consult your natural health care practitioner, or someone else who is knowledgeable in this subject. In spite of what has been said above, it is also true to say that opinion is divided on whether or not a person might suffer from spirulina side effects. Many practitioners take the view that if you are experiencing side effects, then this might be because you have been sold low quality algae. If you have been taking a low quality product, then it is possible that you have been exposed to high levels of mercury, lead and cadmium. Like anything else, spirulina can be contaminated by other things such as insects or hair; this is more likely to happen in low quality spirulina. Most practitioners are of the opinion that spirulina is safe, even when taken in large quantities. Although there is not much research in this area, you could have adverse effects depending on your own body chemistry, how much spirulina you have taken, and the quality of that spirulina. Some possible spirulina side effects, such as those mentioned above, especially the color of waste material, may be a sign that the spirulina is doing its job, rather than causing harmful side effects.
