Signs and Symptoms of Insomnia

What are the signs and symptoms of insomnia?

Insomnia is the body talking to us. It is not a disease or condition in itself in most cases, but rather a symptom of something greater taking place in the body.

A note about Signs and Symptoms of Insomnia

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

Insomnia can be brought on by a number of factors, including a caffeine overload, stress or depression, changes in schedules at work, school or home, as well as pain from certain medical conditions. Oftentimes, medications themselves can cause insomnia as a side effect, particularly when you first begin taking them.

Physicians most often attribute insomnia to stress. It is a rising factor in the lives of more than half the population of the United States - one in three persons suffer from it at some point in their lives every year. Although most people know what it is, that they are suffering from it, and will pay for it day after day as they drag through their days tired, irritable and unable to concentrate, they never seek help outside of an over the counter night time pain or sleep aid.

In seeking to understand the symptoms of insomnia, we should know that researchers classify insomnia into three categories, based on the length of the sleep problem:

  1. Transient insomnia, which lasts less than a week (most common);

  2. Short-term insomnia, which lasts between one and three weeks (usually accompanying another condition); and

  3. Chronic insomnia, which lasts longer than three weeks.

Symptoms of insomnia include such things as: general tiredness or sleepiness through the day, irritability and / or difficulty concentrating, or even difficulties with one's memory. These people suffer more automobile accidents due to fatigue, are prone to be unsociable, and generally have more problems through the day, including a lack of coordination.

As we learn the symptoms of insomnia, learn also that this condition has a pattern. These patterns are related by general or common factors. Those who suffer onset insomnia have difficulty falling asleep when they first lay down. This is often due to stress or an anxiety disorder; though these sufferers are tired, they simply cannot fall asleep.

Middle of the night insomnia is characterized by the inability to fall back asleep once awakened. It is sometimes accompanied by middle and / or terminal insomnia.

Middle insomnia is generally connected with a medical illness accompanied by pain. It entails those who continually wake throughout the night - they sleep, then wake, then sleep once more.

Those who wake early in the morning, who still need sleep, but are 'awake', suffer what is known as terminal insomnia.

As you can see, the signs and symptoms of insomnia may differ, depending on the type of the ailment.

When insomnia sufferers begin to believe it is the bed or bedroom that keeps them from sleep, the problem, at this point, may become chronic. It is most often the daytime symptoms associated with insomnia that causes people to seek medical help, or they may compound their problems by trying to treat themselves with nonprescription sleep aids. Alcohol never helps.

Natural techniques such as relaxation or deep breathing therapy can help. If you believe insomnia may be a chronic problem you are suffering from, talk to your health care practitioner. There may be a more serious underlying problem that should be addressed in order to defeat the symptoms of insomnia. With an evaluation, a physical exam and some tests, you could be on your way to the best night's sleep you have had in a long while.
