A note about TCM for High Blood Pressure or HypertensionIn natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases. In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. Taking these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of certain holistic remedies. This could potentially be due to the fact that TCM is 3000 years old, and hypertension made its presence felt in the modern world only in the 1900s. However, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) describes and categorizes this disease by its major symptoms. The etiology of hypertension is mainly described as a deficiency of Chi or Qi energy (vital energy) and blood. In addition, hypertension is also caused by the contributing factor imbalance of Yin and Yang of heart, liver and kidney. As per TCM practitioners, anger, anxiety, and depression cause excess Yang energy in the body. Dizzy spells and headaches are symptomatic of the earlier stages of this condition and phlegm-dampness at the latter stages when the condition is likely to go into complications of stroke. The principle of TCM treatment to alleviate symptoms of hypertension is to tranquilize the liver-wind and to nourish the Yin energy, while removing excessive Yang energy. Amongst the three modalities of TCM therapy, acupuncture and herbal medicine are reported as being beneficial in lowering hypertension. TCM practitioners also recommend modifying diets to patients that are hypertensive to include Chinese celery, Mung beans, water chestnut, turnips, seaweed, and Chinese hawthorn. If included in the diet in the early stages of the condition, hypertension can be easily controlled. Other methods of treatment as per TCM for high blood pressure include Qigong exercises, cupping therapy, moxibustion, magnet therapy, massage, etc.
