What is Gingivitis - Causes, Risk Factors, Signs and Symptoms, Treatment, Other InformationAre wondering - what is gingivitis? Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gums (gingiva) and the general term for the inflammation caused by bacterial bio-films (better known as plaque) that adhere to the tooth surfaces and accumulate in small gaps between teeth. Tartar, which can form on the teeth as well, can also contribute. Over time, this inflammation can cause deep pockets between the teeth and gums and, ultimately, loss of bone around teeth. Because it is the bone in the jaw that holds the teeth into place, this process and loss of bone causes teeth to become loose and either fall out or have need to be pulled due to the infection. In discussing what is gingivitis, it is useful to note that gingivitis is just one of many periodontal diseases affecting the health of the gums, as well as the soft tissue and bone surrounding them. Periodontal diseases are classified according to severity, ranging from gingivitis, to periodontitis, and finally to acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, which can, if left untreated, be life threatening.

A note about What is Gingivitis - Causes, Risk Factors, Signs and Symptoms, Treatment, Other InformationIn natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases. In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies. What is gingivitis susceptibility or risk caused by? Although bacteria are naturally found within the body, providing protective effects for the most part, it can be harmful as well, and the mouth is a perfect place for it to live in (warm, moist environment and constant food supply). Except for a healthy immune system, the bacteria could get out of hand, particularly due to the way they reproduce. All infection takes place when the body's immune system is or becomes overwhelmed. It is usually necessary for a person to be suffering an underlying illness, or be taking a medication with the ability to suppress the immune system, for him or her to be susceptible to a condition such as gingivitis. Those with leukemia have changes sufficient in the blood vessels of their gums to allow gingivitis to develop, as do those suffering Addison disease, diabetes, HIV, or another such disease that attacks the immune system. What is gingivitis risk also affected by? Hormonal changes in the body during puberty, steroid therapy or pregnancy can also leave the gums vulnerable to a bacterial infection, as can many types of medications used for organ transplants, seizures, and high blood pressure. In terms of its signs and symptoms, what is gingivitis characterized by? Because the formation of infection is silent, many people are not aware there is a problem until the swelling and bleeding gums followed by pain develop. Other signs and symptoms of gingivitis are the breath taking on a foul odor, the gums losing their normal structure, and where they were once pink and strong looking, they begin to recede and take on a dusty red color. What is gingivitis treated with? Treatment begins by removing the source of the infection, and by brushing your teeth regularly with a good toothbrush and natural toothpaste. Incorporate flossing as another means of removing plaque in hard to reach areas. Also, get regular check-ups at a holistically inclined dentist. Those who suffer severe gingivitis may need to undergo an antibiotics regime, as they can help the immune system fight the bacterial infection. Taking antibiotics is not without risks, though. Just remember if you need to resort to an antibiotic that they can kill the friendly bacteria as well as the ones causing the problem. You will need to help your body balance itself by adding some probiotics (live yogurt, sauerkraut, etc) to your diet.
