If you are going to use yoga for insomnia treatment purposes, it's well advised that you aim to look into Hatha yoga, which is known for being slower-paced and gentler on the body. This will increase the amount of blood flow to the tissues, which is the primary objective when aiming to reduce anxiety.

Yoga For Energy Use

In other cases, you may be turning to yoga for insomnia because you are unable to get to sleep at night due to feelings of restlessness from sitting all day. When this is the case, then you're going to want to use a more energetic form of yoga that will get the blood pumping throughout the body.

In this scenario, Power or Ashtanga yoga are smarter bets, as they are more vigorous in nature and will use up much more energy. These are also slightly more advanced forms of yoga, though, so be sure you are taking the time to move through introductory forms first.

When To Do Your Yoga

Once you have found the right type of yoga for insomnia treatment that meets your needs, then you need to decide when you are going to do it. In the best case scenario, you would perform the more vigorous form of yoga earlier on in the afternoon or right after work. This would get the energy out of the body at that point without energizing you so much that you're unable to get to sleep later on.

Then you would perform some light stretches or your slower paced yoga about an hour before turning in to bed, as this would relax the body and prepare you for a good night's rest.

Being consistent with your yoga for insomnia practices will also be important, because that will enable you to get into the habit of doing it, so the effects on your sleep are that much more powerful.

So be sure you're keeping these points in mind. Yoga can be very beneficial for sleep if you take the time to choose the right type and educate yourself on the process.
